Subcatchment Projects

Farmer and landowner - led demonstration projects boosted with

up to $15k funding

The Otakarara-Tūtaekurī Catchment have been busy developing Freshwater Plans using the NZFAP checklist as a guide, over the span of three workshops facilitated by AG First.

The group got hands on at Waiwhare doing a basic stream health assessment and then a visual soil assessment.

The second half of the workshop was spent working on nutrient management and soil health for most, and for those who are looking for Gold standard, it was spent exploring the different options with Erica from AgFirst. The session was then finished off with a very interesting presentation of local water quality results by Kit Rutherford. This created good discussions and interest from the group. This sub-catchment funding has enabled landowners to access valuable resources in the form of Kit and AgFirst consultants at no cost to them!

The purpose is to give farmers and growers an opportunity to get together to:

  • tackle issues of common interest

  • test drive innovative solutions

  • tailor solutions to local conditions

  • identify issues and potential mitigations in a watershed to improve water health
